Clinics at the ranch are tailored to work with all levels and diciplines of riders and their horses. Mornings begin in the indoor arena establishing a better relationship between horse and rider starting with ground work. The afternoon session continues from the saddle and out on the mountain

Stephen's story:
He was born in Richmond, Virginia where he began riding at the age of eight. Stephen rode and showed English pleasure until his late teens. After a twenty year career as a professional artist, he retired to Highland County, Virginia where he pursued a second career with horses. He spent three years working with his friend and neighbor, Mike Armstrong, starting colts and working with troubled horses and troubled owners.
After three years and countless horses, Stephen took a job as a resident trainer for Bull Pasture Mountain Ranch. At the ranch he trains ranch stock, provids clinics, and accepts outside horses for training. Stephen has provided clinics outside the ranch for people like Lydia Cunningham (Mountaintop Ranch) and individuals who enjoy the pleasure of having him on their own property.
He quotes:
"As resident trainer at the beautiful Bull Pasture Mountain Ranch in Highland County, Virginia, I specialize in creating a better healthier, relationship between horse and rider. Through fundamental horsemanship, ground training, and the understanding of it's application, my goal is to resolve problems while creating a safter and more relaxed relationship between you and your horse.
At the ranch we are capable of customizing a clinic to suit your individual needs; however, all work starts on the ground. I strive to establish a solid relationship with you and your horse. Resolving problems such as pawing, standing, nervousness, crowding, lack of trust, trailer loading, and many more. So if you're tired of saying you have a great horse, except... or if you want to brush up on your side pass or learn to ride obstacles; call some friends and schedule a clinic with me at the ranch or your facility."
Clients have nothing but good things to say about Stephen:
"Watching Stephen perform this ground work is pure poetry: a dance between horse and trainer. The results are a common language spoken between the horse and owner/rider. I've been lucky enough to work with Stephen on a number of occasions and each time I leave McDowell I become a better horseman and my horse becomes a more willing partner."
